Come. Join Us.

If you’ve come to one of our concerts and say “I can do that“, come Audition. We are always seeking new members who are enthusiastic about choral music. If you’ve come to one of our concerts and say “… I can’t do that!“, you can still participate. We need ushers, greeters, people to staff the information tables, and other volunteers for a myriad of tasks.

Contact (916) 788-7464 or email to see how you can support us by being a volunteer (and you get to see concerts for free!)

Generally, auditions for new members in Sacramento Master Singers are held at least twice each summer between seasons. Announcements regarding auditions are shared on our Facebook page, on our website and via Constant Contact email blasts. Remember to add your name to our mailing list if you’d like to be kept informed about our next scheduled auditions.

This could be the place for you!
A committee consisting of the choir’s director, Dr. Ralph Hughes, and section leaders conduct auditions. Candidates should be prepared to do the following:

  • Solo Performance
You’ll be expected to sing a short, expressive solo. This can be an art song, familiar hymn, or song. The emphasis should be on emotive singing. Songs with piano accompaniment are preferred, and an accompanist will be provided.
  • Range
Singers will be guided through vocal exercises to demonstrate their entire range, including falsetto for tenors and basses.
  • Sight-Reading
Singers will be asked to sight-sing and/or clap one rhythmic exercise. Also, there will be three other exercises or excerpts to sing at the audition.
  • Intervals
Singers may be asked to perform some common melodic intervals such as a Perfect 4th and Major 3rd.

Is SMS the right choir for you?
The Sacramento Master Singers strives to present professional quality programs representing a wide range of periods, musical styles and languages. The time commitment for singers is considerable. Singers are often required to memorize a portion of each program. Preparation of pieces outside of rehearsal is required. We rehearse on Monday evenings from 7:00 to 9:30 p.m. beginning in late August and continuing through May.

In addition to these Monday night rehearsals, at least two section rehearsals, two quartet rehearsals, and a dress rehearsal are mandatory for the December concert series. A similar number of additional rehearsals are required for the spring concert series. Another expectation is attendance at a 2-day retreat in the mountains each Fall. Those who sing with the Sacramento Master Singers are rewarded with deeply satisfying musical experiences and friendships that make us feel like a family.
